Our Story

It all started with one horse.

Epona’s Path started in the summer of 2009 when its founders, Rita and Curt Reik, adopted a rescued horse from their neighbor in Palm Beach County, Florida. Phantom, a five year old black and white Paint, had been found abandoned on an empty lot with multiple other horses. The entire herd was starving with nothing to eat but used shavings that were being dumped in the lot. When Phantom was rescued by Animal Care, he needed emergency veterinary care to clear the blockage in his esophagus from having eaten so many shavings. He made a quick recovery, and the Reiks got him back to a healthy weight. Realizing he needed a companion, they soon adopted an elderly mare named Mystique, an Appaloosa rescued from a kill pen in Sugar Creek, Ohio.

Phantom and Mystique

While Phantom was young, healthy, and eager to be ridden, Mystique’s riding days were long behind her. Knowing that they were interested in a companion riding horse for Phantom, a local horse rescuer connected with the Reiks who then decided to adopt Riannon, another young, rideable horse who had been rescued from neglect.

Riannon

Riannon was adopted by Epona’s Path as a companion to Phantom and Mystique in the hopes that she would be able to trail ride with Phantom. Riannon had lived on private property with another horse, neither of whom were being cared for properly. After the other horse died and its body was left in the owner’s yard, authorities removed Riannon from the owner’s care and placed her with another horse rescue. Phantom took Riannon under his wing, and the two have been inseparable since.
